Key points

  1. Data has shown that different pulmonary ultrasound patterns can help distinguish different lung pathologies including pneumonia, pulmonary edema, pneumothorax, and pulmonary embolism.

  2. Ultrasound can be used in active disease management by assisting in tracheal intubation or assessing pulmonary congestion during resuscitation or diuresis.

  3. Lung ultrasound can be used in analyzing lung parenchyma before and after recruitment maneuvers and visualizing diaphragmatic excursion and thickening before patient extubation
