Timothy Cote, MD, MPH

Dr. Timothy Cote, MD, MPH, has served as the Director of the Office of Orphan Product Development (OOPD) of the Food and Drug Administration since September 2007. The mission of the OOPD is to promote the development of promising products for treatment, prevention, or diagnosis of rare diseases or conditions. With Dr. Cote’s guidance (and that of his FDA colleagues) the framework laid by the Orphan Drug Act has seen important successes.

Dr. Cote received a medical doctorate from the Howard University College of Medicine, and a master's degree in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health. He is board certified in both Preventive Medicine and Anatomic Pathology. Dr. Cote began Federal service in 1989 with the CDC’s Epidemiology Investigation Service (EIS) and has since continued as an officer in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps assigned to wide variety of positions at CDC, NIH, USDA and FDA.
