Dean Schraufnagel, M.D.

Dean Schraufnagel M.D. is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Pathology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He did his Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at McGill University in Montreal.

He has served the American Thoracic Society in several positions including on its Board of Directors, the Council of Chapter Representatives, Post-Graduate Education Committee, Committee to Develop ATS Website, Communications Committee, Program Review Subcommittee of Program and Budget, Committee to select editor of American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Committee to develop the bylaws for the new ATS, Revenue Development Committee, Nominating Committee, Information System Committee, Task Force on Clinicians, “Birthday Bash” Centennial Committee, Communication and Marketing Committee, Document Editor Search Committee, and Publications Policy Committee. He was the Inaugural ATS Website Editor and now serves as the ATS Website Editor. He has received the American Thoracic Society Presidential Commendation and PAR-Excellence Award.

He was on the Board of Directors of the American Lung Association and many of their committees. He is currently on the Board of Directors has held several positions in the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease including Corresponding member, Committee on Treatment member, Benefactor member, and Secretary and Programming Secretary for their Section of Tuberculosis. He was also the Chairman of the Program Committee, Secretary, and Vice President of their North American Region. He was on the founding board of the International Tuberculosis Foundation and served as its President for 6 years.

He has served on several committees for the National Institutes of Health including being a consultant and member of several study sections, the Scleroderma Lung Study Group and currently the Pulmonary Hypertension in Sickle Cell group. He was the Chief Officer in the Da Vinci Society for the Study of the Airway Circulation. He has been an advisor for the City of Chicago, Cook County and state of Illinois for tuberculosis control. He is listed in Best Doctors in America and America’s Top Physicians. He has been named Attending of the Year twice. He is on the Board of Directors of the Christmas Seals and Charitable Stamps Society. He has been involved in Global Village Scientist and Young Scientists' Faculty going into the local grade school to demonstrate science. He co-chaired the Committee for Smoke-Free Oak Park (Illinois).

He has refereed articles for many journals and grants for many heath care organizations. He has received several grants--recently to conduct clinical trials in scleroderma lung disease and pulmonary hypertension in sickle cell. He has organized many symposia. He is an attending physician at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Veterans Hospitals and served on many university and hospital committees. He is the Fellowship Program Director for the Section of Respiratory, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at University of Illinois at Chicago.

He has published more than 100 articles and edited 2 books: Electron Microscopy of the Lung. In the "Lung Biology in Health and Disease" series; Executive Editor: C.
