Self-management in COPD and chronic lung disease

Self-management describes formalised patient education programs aimed at teaching skills and providing support for health promoting behaviour1. It has been cited as a strategy for reducing hospital admissions in patients with stable COPD2,3 by assisting with the prompt recognition and management of acute exacerbations4,5. A recently updated Cochrane review found that self-management in the absence of supervised exercise was effective in reducing respiratory-related and all cause hospital admissions and improving health related quality of life in patients with COPD3.

In this Podcast, Dr. Samantha Harrison interviews Dr. Roberto Benzo, who is an expert in the field of mindfulness in chronic lung disease. Dr. Benzo discusses the role of mindfulness in the management of individuals with chronic lung disease in the context of unique considerations and problems for this patient group. Dr. Benzo describes specific delivery parameters and outlines approaches to the evaluation of self-management programs.
