The ATS SRN Journal Club, a live discussion, is usually conducted on a web based platform and is approximately an hour long. However, this year, we are trying a new format, i.e., a podcast (20-25 minutes), where the author presents their work in the first few minutes and is followed by a discussion between the author(s), moderator and an expert in the field.
This podcast is a discussion of a recently published paper in Chest entitled " Oral appliances for the management of OSA: An updated review of the literature."
Dr. Rob Stansbury, co-chair of the ATS SRN Journal Club Committee, interviews lead author Dr. Mona Hamoda and senior author Fernanda Almeida. Dr. Hamoda is a year-four doctoral candidate in Craniofacial Science in the Department of Oral Health Sciences at the University of British Columbia and recipient of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine's Graduate Student Research Excellence Award. Dr. Almeida is an Associate Professor in Oral Health Sciences at the University of British Columbia and specializes in obstructive sleep apnea and dental sleep medicine. Dr. Stansbury is joined in the podcast by Dr. Harold Smith who serves as current President of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and has been using oral appliances to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea since 1993. He currently consults for five major Indianapolis hospital sleep disorder clinics in the management of obstructive sleep apnea.
The discussion focuses on the role of oral appliances in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and reviews important factors for consideration when utilizing oral appliance therapy.
