Developing competencies for any discipline involves describing the skills and knowledge required to provide the services. (1) To benefit the population being served, professional competence involves clinical reasoning and skills, scientific knowledge, and communication skills. (2) The 2010 Clinical Competency Guidelines for Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) Professionals published in the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention highlights thirteen primary competencies. These competencies provide a comprehensive knowledge framework for PR health care professionals. (3)
In this podcast Nina Bracken, APN, interviews Dr. Eileen Collins, PhD, RN, an expert in the field of Pulmonary Rehabilitation and exercise interventions to increase exercise tolerance in patients with chronic disease including COPD, diabetes and renal failure. Dr. Collins discusses the multi-disciplinary approach to Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs for patients with chronic lung disease as well as the most recently published competency guidelines.
