Background And Goals

Background:  The Clinical Practice and Research related to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer are vital activities for clinicians, researchers and public health officials worldwide.  In 2013, the ATS Board of Directors recognized this and approved the upgrade of Thoracic Oncology from section to Assembly status. As such, research, clinical practice, and advocacy efforts related to lung cancer have received a boost in visibility.

Goal: The goal of the Assembly on Thoracic Oncology is to expand and enhance the breadth and quality of clinical, research, and advocacy efforts related to lung cancer within ATS.   Activities to achieve this goal may include:  scheduling scientific sessions at the International Conference; planning postgraduate training courses; writing position papers and statements and enhancing the science of lung cancer;  establishing collaborations with funding agencies and other respiratory disease organizations (ACCP, ERS, JRS, AATS), and cancer societies (IASLC, AACR, ASCO). The Assembly will provide a home for those respiratory scientists and clinicians that wish to actively advance lung cancer related activities through the ATS.

Who may join the Assembly:   Any ATS member with interest or expertise in Lung Cancer can join the Assembly. As an ATS member you may choose 1 Primary Assembly, up to 2 secondary assemblies.

If you would like to become a member of the Assembly on Thoracic Oncology or have any questions relating to the assembly, please e-mail toa@thoracic.org.
